Frost Warning and Fall Photo Opportunity

The first frost warning for our area in the northeast is this evening so it was time
to go out into the garden and start preparing it for the approaching winter.  Fall is a bittersweet time of year for me since I long to be in the garden as much as
possible and as the temperatures decrease I know the time outside is limited.  On
the other hand the colors of fall are spectacular and the gardens seem to come to
life one last time before they go into dormancy.  Before starting my fall clean up today I figured I would get some last photos. There are still a few blooms hanging on before it gets too cold so come take a look!

As the temperatures drop in my Long Island garden and the landscape slowly goes to sleep I dream of spring and new ventures.    Autumn does have some merit with all the changing colors that are so beautiful at this time of year.  For now I will just have to enjoy the beauty of fall and start planning for next year when the garden comes to life once again.

As Always...Happy Gardening!

  1. Hi Lee, Thanks for visiting me, so I could come over and visit back. I am liking what I see in your garden and on your blog! Your fall garden is very pretty. Love the red berries and your ornamental grasses add a touch of 4 season interest. Surprised to see you can grow crape myrtle - I'm envious - but my garden is zone 5. Your trees look pretty too. I continue garden "putting to bed." Most of my fall tasks are completed; I am still "raking and taking" pine needles for mulch. I hope to complete mulch acquisition this week. Have a wonderful week!

    1. Hi Beth. Thank you for stopping by! I'm not sure if we got that frost last evening but the temperature was 38 degrees when we woke this morning...close enough! I got most of the perennial beds done before the temperatures dropped so I am happy. Enjoy the fall!

  3. I still have flowers blooming here, so the cooler weather is just starting to reach us. I agree, Fall is such a great time for picture taking. As much as the color commands, so does the textures and changing plant forms. You really have such pretty maples with color and bark texture. Almost time for the big change I think with leaves dropping so fast.

    1. Enjoy while the blooms and color while it lasts. We had about two weeks of beautiful color before things really started to change but the blooms are still trying to hang on! Our leaves started falling just recently and now the nightime temps are in the mid to upper 30's with frost warnings..burrr!

  4. Lovely autumn colours in your garden! That Coral Bark Maple is magnificent! Over here in London we haven’t had any night frost yet but by end of next week it might be cold enough to just dip below during the night. I hope the cold period won’t last long, both me and my garden likes it better when it stays well above freezing – although I am out in the garden all year round as long as it doesn’t rain. I don’t really put my garden to bed for the winter, just move over to a different season and different plants to take care of :-)

    1. Thank you for visiting Helene! It is so wonderful that you can garden all year long! Once the weather gets cold here it's inside gardening for me and more blog time...not a totally bad thing. Enjoy your gardens!

  5. Hi Lee,
I enjoyed seeing all of the colors and textures you have going there. I try to be a fan of fall, but when I think of winter being on its way, I start longing for spring to come back. It's gotten down to 30 several times here, but some of the blooms and leaves are still looking pretty good. Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment.

    1. Yes...the temperatures are starting to drop here as well. I do remember one January though a few years ago when it was mild enough to garden...so I did!

  6. Your garden is still looking lovely, Lee! You've captured the beauty of the changing leaves in your photos. And as sad as it is to see summer fade away, fall is equally gorgeous in its own way.
