Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day & Foliage Follow-Up April: Welcome Spring Blooms!

Welcome to my Garden!
It is official! Spring has finally arrived and it is time to take another stroll to see all that nature has to offer. After an extremely mild winter, the temperatures have accelerated into the 60 to 70 degree range, with unusual highs in the 80's for the past two days! With summer like temperatures and longer hours of daylight this gardener is in her glory! After a day of designing, I am still able to wander out into my own garden and get some chores done, and with mud under fingernails, it is therapy for the soul. Welcome to my Long Island, zone 7a garden. I hope you enjoy the stroll!
Magnolia 'Royal Star'
First on our stroll are the beautiful white star-shaped blooms of Magnolia 'Royal Star', which is one of the earlier blooming flowering trees to bring in Spring.

Get up close and you can smell their sweet fragrance!
Weeping Pussy Willow (Salix Pendula)
Along the patio garden, Weeping Pussy Willow (Salix Pendula) is showing off its puffy catkins...
Peony Coming Up!
while daylilies emerge along with the bright pinkish-red new foliage of Peony, with blooms on the way for next month!
New Foliage of Peony Emerging
The color of the new growth is amazing this time of year!
Allium 'Globemaster' Getting Buds!
In the pool garden, Allium 'Globemaster' is producing its pretty buds. Giant purple blooms will appear the end of May through June. Stay tuned!
Spirea 'Limemound', Allium and Daylily
Along with Allium 'Globemaster' is Daylily 'Stella D Oro' and Spirea 'Limemound', each sprouting new growth. The foliage of Daylily along with the blooms of Allium make for a nice combination.
Anna's Magic Ball Arborvitae
Anna's Magic Ball Arborvitae, a compact, slow-growing evergreen shrub known for its excellent foliage is especially vibrant during the changing seasons. Here in springtime, the foliage appears to be even more striking.
Pieris 'Cavatine' (Dwarf Andromeda)
The month of April also brings the blooms of Japanese Andromeda. This variety is Pieris 'Cavatine', a compact evergreen that produces beautiful white bell-shaped blooms.
Sedum Rossettes
Sedum is a late summer blooming perennial, but I also enjoy it for its perfectly shaped compact foliage, which adds interest all season long.
Pulmonaria (Lungwort)
Moving along to the shade garden is Pulmonaria. I didn't have this beauty until just a few years ago and am enjoying its dainty purple blooms in early spring. The foliage is also very interesting with its deep green background highlighted by white spots throughout.
Prunus cerasifera 'Krauter Vesuvious' (Ornamental Plum)
Here is Ornamental Plum 'Krauter Vesuvious' which is one of the more colorful ornamental trees, with  pink blooms, followed by deep burgundy foliage. It grows upright to a height of 15-20 feet tall.
Ornamental Plum April Blooms
The clusters of blooms are so delicate!
Forthysia
I planted this Forthysia many years back on the front street median and get to enjoy its blooms from my front window each spring. It is putting on a nice display this season.
Hellebore 'Champion'
One of my favorite all season plants is Hellebore, and this one has been showing its colorful bracts since February. I just got done removing winter scorched foliage and the entire plant is covered in magnificent blooms.
Hellebore 'Champion' Early Spring
HELPFUL TIP: Removing winter scorched leaves allows for the formation of new spring foliage, and also showcases the blooms.
Sedum Groundcover Mix
Along the pool border, this Sedum groundcover mix is starting to come to life with its spectacular assortment of color! Yellow blooms will rise above the plant on in summer, but to me its all about the succulent's foliage!
Nepeta 'Walker's Low' Foliage (Dwarf Catmint)
Also along the pool border is the grayish-green foliage of Nepeta 'Walker's Low'. Bluish-purple flowers will follow and last throughout summer.
Hellebore 'Dark and Handsome'
A later blooming Hellebore in the spring garden is 'Dark and Handsome'. The foliage is narrower and darker in color when compared to other varieties and the blooms are absolutely gorgeous, bordering  deep burgundy to almost black in appearance. This one is a definitely a show stopper!

Here is a closer look!
Hyacinths for Springtime!
Last, but not least, it wouldn't be Spring without some Hyacinth blooms! Here they are blooming in the perennial border along the back patio.

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day & Foliage Follow-Up March: Spring Blooms and Anticipation!

Welcome to my March Garden!
Welcome to my Long Island, zone 7a March garden! With spring arriving in just five days, the garden is full of excitement as winter flowers are in bloom, spring bulbs make their appearance, perennials come to life and trees are forming buds and catkins. Come along on the tour!
Black Mondo Grass Planter
As we all know, March is a month of surprises. We have had a combination of daytime temperatures in the 50's, followed by drops of twenty degrees the following day with winds and snow squalls. One day life is all about being in the garden, while then next it is back to staying warm inside while gazing out the window to watch the snow fall upon the spring blooms.
Weeping Pussy Willow Catkins
One of the first and also one of my favorite signs of spring are the appearance of white fluffy catkins on the Weeping pussy Willow by the back patio. It only takes a warm day or two to really get them going and sometimes it seems like they just pop over night!
Hello Hyacinths!
In the back perennial border, Hyacinth bulbs are forcing their green foliage with delicate pink tips as they appear above the soil...
Crocus Blooming!
and the Crocus are blooming right along side them!
Front Garden Views
The front garden still looks rather winterlike, but I am convinced that the Weeping Japanese Maple is starting to show signs of life.
Front Island Bed
But wait...look closer! There are more crocus on the way!
Sedum are Appearing!
The sedum in the front garden bed are certainly starting to show their perfectly shaped rosettes with a pinkish hue. Once they start coming up, it is full speed ahead.
Hello Allium 'Globemaster'!
An exciting view is that of Allium 'Globemaster' appearing in the back pool garden. There are nine bulbs coming up at the present time, and the daylilies surrounding them are starting to emerge too!
Winter to Spring Transition
Along the front walkway and driveway gardens, the newer growth from last season on the Coral Bark Maple is still growing red, but before long foliage will start to appear...
Hellebore 'Champion'
and Hellebore 'Champion' is displaying its lovely yellowish-green blooms with pink highlights in the back shade garden.
Hellebore 'Merlin'
'Hellebore 'Merlin' and 'Shooting Star' are joining the show with the deeper pink blooms of  'Merlin' and pinkish-white blooms of  'Shooting Star'.
Hellebore 'Shooting Star'
The Hellebores perform very well at the northern side of the property and along the shadowing from evergreens bordering the back fence line, and they provide that well needed gardening goodness from January though March!
Arborvitae 'Anna's Magic Ball' and Mugo Pine
I enjoy seeing changes in foliage this time of year. The orangey hue of 'Anna's Magic Ball' Arborvitae from wintertime really pops in color against the deep green foliage of Mugo Pine.
Back Patio Garden
In the back garden, Osmanthus 'Goshiki' is showing signs of new growth...
Glorious Seed Cones (Skyland's Oriental Spruce)
and the mature female seed cones of Skyland's Oriental Spruce are abundant against its golden foliage.

More news!!!🎕 If you haven't heard, I am in the process of working on a new book for the northeast and Mid-Atlantic garden! Organized in a similar fashion as Gardening By Month, this one will be a reference of plants and inspiration specifically for the shade garden. I have been writing a couple of hours each day, will need to take some high resolution photos in springtime, then hopefully will have it ready to publish in 2023!

Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day & Foliage Follow Up: Bring on Those April Blooms!

Welcome to My April Garden!

Welcome to Garden Bloggers' Bloom Day and Foliage Follow-Up for the month of April, a time to venture out into the garden and appreciate all the beauty that nature has to offer. The skies have been for the most part sunny with temperatures in the upper 50's and into the lower 60's on some days, signaling that spring is here, and creating the perfect working weather. While the world was in so much uncertainty a year ago, the daily routine seems to be slowly getting back to just a little more "normal". Being fully vaccinated, I can feel a bit more at ease when meeting with clients and getting to create beautiful gardens, a passion which I most enjoy! Ready for a tour? Come along and see that my Long Island garden has to offer!
Crocus
It just wouldn't be spring without the traditional crocus! I love how these purple beauties just pop up out of the ground and open to glorious blooms almost overnight. I cannot get enough of them, as they really do have a way of brightening the day.
Magnolia 'Royal Star'
Another April delight is this Magnolia 'Royal Star' in the back pool garden. It produces an abundance of outstanding fragrant white blooms every spring right on schedule. Magnolia 'Royal Star' is hardy in USDA zones 4-8.
Forsythia
Here is the Forsythia which I planted years ago on our front street median. It thrives in the harshest of conditions and continues to please every year with its cheerful yellow blooms.
Japanese Andromeda 'Cavatine'
On the front island bed is Dwarf Andromeda 'Cavatine'. It has become a favorite evergreen shrub for its delicate bell-shaped white blooms in spring, followed by decorative seeds head in fall.
Grape Hyacinth & Miniature Tulip Collection
I couldn't resist purchasing this bulb mixture and planting them last fall, only to await the surprise in spring. I have been watching this spot everyday and almost overnight, the grape hyacinths appeared. The tulips had appeared when I arrived home from working all day...what a nice surprise!
Miniature Tulips
Here are those wonderful miniature tulips up close!
Purple Hyacinth
Here are the traditional Hyacinth. I have two varieties, purple and pink...
Pink Hyacinth
and they are oh so fragrant!
Daffodils
To add to the color palette, here are some yellow miniature Daffodils to brighten the day!
 Helleborus orientalis 'Merlin'
I continue to enjoy an assortment of Helleborus (generally hardy in USDA zones 4-9, or 5-8, depending on the species). Here are three varieties, Helleborous 'Merlin' (rose pink), Helleborous' Dark & Handsome' (dark purple-black) and Helleborous 'Champion' (yellow-green). 'Shooting Star' (pale pinkish-white), which I highlighted during the winter months is still blooming in the northern shade garden.
Helleborus orientalis 'Dark & Handsome'
Hellebore Tip: Remove any winter-damaged foliage in spring to promote more blooms and encourage new growth.
Helleborus orientalis 'Champion'
Helleborus 'Champion' is the later blooming variety, going right through the end of April.
Prunus 'Krater Vesuvius' (Purple Flowering Plum)
Flowering Plum blossoms are also signaling spring. Prunus 'Krater Vesuvius' produces delicate pink blooms in April. 'Krater Vesuvius' is very similar to 'Thundercloud' Plum, only the foliage is a deeper burgundy.
Flowering Plum Blooms!
Here are the dainty blooms up close!
Peony 'Bartzella' on the Way!
In the perennial border, Peony 'Bartzella' is displaying its new brilliant reddish-pink foliage, that will turn to green before those glorious blooms arrive in May!
'Stella D Oro' Daylily and Allium 'Globemaster' Combination
Allium 'Globemaster' is also preparing for its May display! 'The foliage of Daylily borders the Allium bulbs, creating a pleasing combination, while serving the function of covering the spent lower foliage of the Allium later on in the season.
Rosemary Blooming in Springtime
Here is one happy Rosemary plant in the herb garden. It has been producing random blooms during spring and fall over the past year.
Montauk Daisies (Foliage)

Montauk Daisy displays its foliage, which will be followed by blooms during late summer into fall. There is always something to look forward to in every season. By the way...I'm celebrating the three month anniversary of my fourth and latest book, Gardening By Month: A Monthly Guide to Planning the Northeastern & Mid-Atlantic Garden!😊After finally accomplishing my goal of creating 12-months of garden interest, my labor of love inspired me to write this book. I am hoping it will inspire readers to create their own 12-month garden!
